Frequently Asked Questions

 Janitorial Questions
Q.) How do I use a pumice stone so that it won't scratch?
A.) Make sure you wet the pumice stone first and then just rub in on the ring. It should come right off. If the area is smooth when you are done and a ring still remains, it could be a permanent stain.
Q.) I see you carry a product that eliminates odors electronically. Can you explain how this works?
A.) You must be referring to the The Zontec Ozone Generator (COM-PA600) The Zontec PA600 eliminates odors by producing a controllable level of ozone. The Ozone is created electronically by converting oxygen and ozone. By its very nature, ozone will revert to oxygen within a short period of time. It is this process of returning to oxygen that creates the deodorizing effect. The third oxygen atom in ozone must attach itself to another gaseous element. It is such gaseous elements that are the source of everything we smell. In combining with the third atom, the odorous element is oxidized and the odor eliminated.
Q.) What is the difference between a 55 gal-siphon pump and a regular 55-gal pump?
A.) The siphon pump flows continuously while the regular pump dispenses a predetermined amount of liquid per stroke.
Q.) What is the difference between a multi-fold and a C-fold paper towel?
A.) Multi-fold towels are interlocked with a Z type fold; pull one out and the next one is partially dispensed. C-fold towels are not interlocked. They have a C-type fold.
Q.) What is the difference between resilient and non resilient floors?
A.) Resilient flooring is defined as floor that is capable of withstanding shock without permanent damage. A good example of this type of flooring would be vinyl, asphalt, tile, rubber, linoleum, and vinyl asbestos. Non resilient flooring is more commonly known as hard floors. They are defined as durable but not capable of withstanding shock without deformation or rupture. Examples include terrazzo, concrete, marble, ceramic tile, marble, brisk, and slate.
Q.) Can you tell me a little more about spray buffing and what the proper procedures to perform this task are?
A.) Spray buffing is a way of cleaning the heavy traffic area of a floor in order to extend the period before stripping. To properly spray buff a floor, you will first need to sweep the floor with a treated dust mop and remove any sticky deposits with a putty knife. For maximum ease of application, clean and restore in one operation with a spray buff formulation using a floor machine with a red or white spray buffing pad. Apply spray buff formulation as a light mist from a spray bottle. Three to four passes of the floor machine will bring back the shine.
Q.) Sand screens are rated by grit. Which grade is more aggressive, a 100 grit or a 60 grit?
A.) The lower the grit rating, the more course or more aggressive the screen becomes.

 Carpet Care Questions
Q.) I am constantly nicking and scratching furniture and damaging baseboards while vacuuming. What can you recommend to help me prevent this?
A.) The "Soft Vac" vacuum cover ( SA-E12C 12" or SA-E16C 16" ). This item is made from a soft PVC laminate cover padded with high density two pound polyethylene. It forms a protective cushion between your vacuum and any surface that it touches. The Soft Vac vacuum cover is designed to fit most single motor uprights manufactured by Eureka, Sanitaire, Kent, and Hoover.
Q.) Does Certified put color brightener in their shampoos? What are the benefits of using a brightener for carpeting?
A.) A carpet brightener is a great addition to make a good cleaning look even better. Color Brightener will restore the original luster and sheen to fabrics, enhance the brightness of whites and pastels shades, and improves the appearance by coating fibers and masking yellow. All Certified rug and upholstery shampoos and hot water extraction cleaning agents already contain Certified Color Brightener However, more may be added if indicated by the appearance of the fabric.
Q.) What are dry cleaning sponges used for?
A.) They are used to remove smoke and soot from walls after a fire and for cleaning surfaces that cannot be wet cleaned. They are ideal for use on painted walls and ceilings, wallpaper, acoustical tile, paneling, lamps and window shades. After use, dry cleaning sponges can be washed and reused.
Q.) What spot/stain remover would you recommend for red stains such as wine or Kool-Aid?
A.) Use Kleenrite General Spotter ( KR-015 ).  This is an excellent, ready to use spot and stain remover. This product is used to remove black filtration, grease, food stains, and red stains on all water safe fabrics.
Q.) What is the difference between Certified Dr. Spot & Dr. Stain?
A.) Dr. Spot is most effective on oil soluble stains such as tar, wax, grease, fats, and gum. Dr. Stain is most effective on water based stains such as washable inks, clay, blood, jams, and liquor.  Both products are ideal companions. For example, residue left after using Dr. Spot may be removed by using Doctor Stain.
Q.) Do you sell a carpet care chemical that removes browning or yellowing?
A.) Certified No Brown (CI-128) or Fab Pro Rxide for browning (FAB-113). Certified No Brown is used for the prevention or removal of cellulosic browning and water stains from rugs and upholstery. It is also effective for the removal of fresh urine stains that have not effected the fabric dye. No Brown is a concentrated product that needs to be diluted with water or neutral shampoos. It is not compatible with alkaline shampoos or jet extraction solutions but may be applied after their use to prevent browning. FabPro Rxide is a very potent oxygen-releasing bleach for treating browning on fringes of oriental rugs or treating browning on undyed rugs. This chemical is ready to use and needs no dilution.
Q.) What product would you recommend to remove coffee stains?
A.) Kleenrite: Tannin & Coffee stain remover (KR-030). Unlike many others, this formula does not require you to rinse the fabric after you apply it. It contains a unique property that provides superior removal of browning (such as tannin stains caused by over wetting or the use of high alkaline chemicals). This product can be used to remove coffee, tea, urine, and similar stains. It is not a bleach and does not contain hydrochloric acid and is safe to use on all fabrics.
Q.) You carry three different sizes of vacuum hose.  Which one is generally used with a portable extractor?
A.) You will find that we carry the 1", 1 1/2" and 2" hoses. In the carpet cleaning industry, one & one half inch inner diameter ( 1 1/2" ) is a standard. However, if you need a replacement hose for your portable extractor and are uncertain of which one you need, you can measure the inner diameter of the hose.
Q.) What the difference between how the bonnet method of carpet cleaning works versus the rotary shampoo method of carpet cleaning versus extraction cleaning?
A.) First, there are two ways you can use the carpet bonnets: (1) The carpet is sprayed with properly diluted bonnet cleaning solution, yhen the bonnet is spun on top of the carpet with a rotary machine. The bonnet agitates and soaks up the soiled solution.  Or (2) You can soak the bonnet in a bucket of diluted bonnet cleaning solution and then wring it out. The bonnet is then placed on a rotary machine and spun on the carpet to remove the soil.  With the rotary shampoo method you would fill your floor machine solution tank with water and add the proper amount of carpet shampoo (SA-150, 160, 170) to the solution tank. The shampoo is dispensed to the shower feed brush where the scrubbing action turns it to foam. The carpets dirt gets suspended in the foam and the foam is left to dry and then vacuumed up, leaving the carpet clean.  With the extraction cleaning method, you fill your extractors solution tank with water and the proper amount of extraction detergent Depressing the trigger on the wand will inject the cleaning solution into the carpet, then the extraction nozzle vacuums the soiled solution back up into the machines recovery tank, leaving the carpet deep cleaned.
Q.) What is the purpose of a carpet traffic lane spotter and how do I apply it?
A.) It is used for pre-treating heavily traveled areas of carpeting before regular cleaning is performed. It is usually applied with a hand held pump up sprayer ( PS-R7, PS-R11 ), or depending on the circumstance, an injection sprayer may be used.
Q.) Why do you say I'll need defoamer for my carpet extraction machine?
A.) It is used to control excessive foaming or sudsing in the recovery tank, which leaves more room for dirty water.  Using a defoamer will eliminate frequent trips to dump the recovery tank as well as protecting the vacuum motor from moisture damage.
Q.) What is the difference between carpet blocks ( SA-79 ) and carpet squares (SA-80)?
A.) Carpet blocks are used to protect carpets from permanent stains that are caused by placing furniture on wet carpeting.  Use carpet blocks to raise furniture off their just cleaned carpets, preventing the finish on the furniture from staining the carpet and to protect the furniture from water damage. Carpet blocks are snap apart style. Carpet squares are sheets of plastic 3x3 inches, 50 per pack. They are the economical alternative to the carpet blocks (SA-79) which are used to protect furniture from wet carpet and wet carpet from furniture stains.
Q.) Why won't you ship my dehumidifier via UPS?
A.) This item is oversized and UPS will not ship this item. It can be shipped by truck only. Often, many freight lines will have a flat rate and will ship up to a certain weight for the same amount of money. It can be very economical to ship several items that are oversized at once. Please contact a sales representative for more details.
Q.) Why are the Grandi-Groomers ( SA-161 ) so popular with carpet cleaning pros?
A.) They are used to agitate pretreatment chemicals used before extracting or shampooing the carpet, to lift pile and loosen dirt. They can also be used after applying protectant to attain adhesion to the carpet. The Grandi-Groomer leaves the carpet fibers upright for fast drying and gives the finished carpet a professional look.
Q.) Which Elky Pro chemical would you recommend for rotary shampoo cleaning?
A.) Use Elky Pro rug shampoo and soil extractor (SA-150, 160, 170 ). Elky Pro Rug Shampoo and soil extractor revitalizes dirty carpets and upholstery. Stains and heavy soil can be removed with ease and leave fabrics with new freshness. The extra dry foam minimizes wetting, thereby shortening drying time. No sticky or gummy reside is deposited to attract new soils and fabrics stay cleaner longer. A special additive helps to prevent bacterial odors. Professionally tested, Rug Shampoo and Soil Extractor will perform in any rotary application equipment. This product is to be used with colorfast fabrics only.
Q.) What Elky Pro chemical would you recommend for extraction cleaning?
A.) Use the Elky Pro X-L liquid extraction detergent ( SA-703 or SA-704 ). X-L Liquid Detergent is formulated for hot water extraction systems and provides a balanced detergent system for cleaning carpets that are loaded with tough soils. This product is a blend of detergent, hard water softener, and special buffers to emulsify oil and grease while suspending soils for easy pick up.

 Chemicals
Q.) Can "Kwik Kleen" neutral cleaner be used as a neutralizer?
A.) No, it is a neutral pH cleaner, not a neutralizer. A neutralizer will neutralize the pH level of a product down to 7. Kwik Kleen is NOT a neutralizer, but a neutral cleaner. This means that it already has a neutral pH and can be used on virtually any type of floor without any harmful effects.
Q.) What are the measurements for pH level testing?
A.) The pH scale ranges from 0-14. A Rating of a 7 is considered neutral on the pH scale - anything below this is considered an acid and anything above seven is considered an alkaline. The closer to 0 the pH rating is, the more acidic the solution is. The closer to 14 the pH rating is, the more basic the solution is.
Q.) Where can I obtain an MSDS sheet for your products?
A.) Material Safety Data Sheets are included with your order anytime that you order a chemical. There is no need to request one. If you would like to preview the MSDS sheet before purchasing a chemical, they are available on our website here or can be faxed to you upon request. Please contact our sales department for more information.

 Broom and Brushes Questions
Q.) What product would you recommend to clean a concrete floor in a factory when using a floor machine?
A.) Use Spectrum degreaser or Max Orange Industrial degreaser.
Q.) You carry several brooms with different fill materials. Can you tell me where you would recommend using these different types of brooms?
A.) First, tampico is a vegetable fiber that comes from the agave plant in Mexico. In it's dry state, it is used extensively in floor and counter brushes. Its water absorption quality makes it suitable for scrubbing. Second, we carry palmyra and bassine. Palmyra is a vegetable fiber from the Palmyra Palm leaf or stalk from India. Palmyra is a cinnamon brown color and has a medium stiffness. Bassine is obtained from the stiffer portions of the stalk. It is cut to specific sizes and then graded for stiffness. The medium stiff to stiff texture, combined with its water resistance and durability, make an ideal product for scrubbing and course sweeping. Next is Palmetto. It is the only brush fiber that is produced in the US on a commercial basis. This material is extremely difficult to process, therefore it can be very expensive. It has very good durability and water resistance and is used for scrubbing brushes and whisk brooms. Next are the wire fills. They consist of a variety of tempered steel, stainless steel, brass, and plated steel wires. Round wire is used for utility and general maintenance brushes as well as scratch brushes. Flat tempered wire is used for heavy duty push brooms. Horsehair is an animal hair. It is a soft to moderately stiff material. It is blended with other materials and is an excellent all-purpose floor sweep, counter/window/radiator brush. Nylon/Polypropylene is a man-made filament available in a wide range of diameters with straight and crimped strands. Its excellent resistance to most common chemicals and water create a multitude of desirable applications for this product. It is used pure or blended with other materials in floor brushes, counter brushes, and scrub brushes. Plastic is a product produced in a laboratory with many varieties, each with its own properties, creating uniqueness from other fibers. It is used in a variety of floor, scrub, and utility brushes. Finally, flagging is exploded tips on synthetic ends in plastic or nylon fill. The fuzzy effect is beneficial for trapping fine dust particles. It is used in a variety of angled brooms, counter brushes, and lobby dust brooms.
Q.) Can you explain the different fill materials that are available on your push brooms, and what type of applications are they recommended for?
A.) The fine fill is excellent for dust control and is best suited for sweeping very fine particles of dirt and dust from almost every surface. It usually consists of synthetic, horsehair, or nylon blend that is sometimes flagged. The next sweeping grade of fill material is medium. This is an excellent choice for sweeping fine and medium particles from any surface. It usually consists of tampico and polypropylene and is a good general purpose brush. The coarse fill is an excellent choice for heavy or course material in most industrial applications and for removing difficult dirt and deposits from most surfaces. It usually consists of palmyra, bassine, and polypropylene. Finally, indoor/outdoor fill is designed to move heavy and coarse fill dirt as well as fine dust particles. A combination of heavy, coarse polypropylene in the center and medium polypropylene fill around the borders makes this an ideal fill as an all purpose sweeper.
Q.) You carry four different styles of push brooms. Can you tell me what application you would recommend each for?
A.) Floor brushes are recommended for general purpose usage on smooth surface floors in offices, factories, and stores. They are usually classified as fine-medium grade. Garage brushes are recommended for heavy sweeping on concrete or rough surfaces. They are usually classified as medium-coarse grade. Street brooms are recommended for general street and heavy floor sweeping. The fill material bristles are normally longer than the floor or garage brushes. They are usually classified as a coarse grade. Deck brushes are used for tough scrubbing jobs on floors and large surfaces.
Q.) What is the difference between your corn, angled, and lobby brooms?
A.) Hesco carries three types of brooms. Corn brooms are made from corn fill material. There are several classifications of corn brooms ranging from "standard" to "warehouse". The differences in classification are based on handle thickness and the weight of the corn fill material that makes up the broom. Angled brooms are made with long lasting, washable, synthetic bristles that are cut at an angle. These brooms are cut in two ways; flagged bristles for sweeping fine particles and unflagged bristles for sweeping rough surfaces and outdoors. Finally, lobby brooms are smaller versions of corn brooms. They are generally used with dust pans to sweep small areas.
Q.) Can your absorbent compound be used to clean up vomit?
A.) Yes! Voban, ( COM-241 ) is fortified with enzymes to counteract odors from vomit as well as child and pet accidents and is ideal for sweeping up wet mishaps per the label instructions.
